Vacations are always difficult to plan when you have a dog.  Sometimes it seems easier to settle on camping or staycations because most vacation spots aren’t built with pets in mind and it is hard to leave them behind.

Although dogs aren’t allowed on Siesta Key beach, Sarasota County has over 50 dog-friendly (on leash) parks and six off leash paw parks, all within a convenient drive from Siesta Key.

Here are a few tips for traveling with pets:

Bring Your Dog Bed from Home

This is certainly going to be easier if you travel by car, but having something of theirs with a familiar smell will be helpful for the adjustment.  Also, if you have the room, bring a blanket along as well.  It will help them feel more comfortable in a strange place.

Practice the Same Routine

If you walk your dog in the morning, continue that practice on vacation.  Likewise, try to incorporate the same sleep schedule as well.  It’s good for everyone not to deviate from your routine.

Bring Along Some New Toys

You will be rewarding yourself while on vacation and it makes sense to reward your do as well.  A couple of new toys, mixed in with their favorite ones, will help your pet stay occupied and refrain from getting bored with their new surroundings.

Fix Some Meals at Home

By renting a place with a kitchenette, you can add a bit more normalcy to your routine by cooking some meals at home.  If you are lucky to find a unit with an outside barbeque, your dog will feel like they are right in the mix of things.
